Procedure for using a Splinter Box

1. Remove the Splinter Box from the stowage and check the rubber coaming.
2. First, check the availability of support inside the respective compartment for the Breast shore.
3. If support is not available inside the compartment, erect a Proud Shore.
4. Hold the splinter box against the ship’s side/ respective surface, ensuring good contact of rubber coaming with the surface.
5. Erect the Breast Shore against the Splinter Box and Proud Shore.
6. Keep a rubber pad on the outer surface of the Splinter Box if the Metallic Shore is used as the Breast Shore.
7. Tighten the breast shore.

Safety Precautions

Hold the Splinter Box firmly when connecting the Breast Shore.
Use a rubber pad to avoid metal-to-metal contact.
Check the rubber coaming before putting the Splinter Box.
